Hosts and defending champions Kenya led seven other teams in qualifying for the main cup quarter finals at the 16th Safaricom Sevens, winning their three Pool A matches to emerge top. Kenya began with a 26-7 win over French side Grenoble, registering a 36-0 result over Rwanda before beating neighbours Uganda 22-7 in their final pool match. Grenoble joined Kenya in the quarters by virtue of finishing second in this pool.

South Africa’s Emerging Boks finished top of Pool B, registering three straight wins and will be joined in the quarter finals by debutants Auckland Vikings of New Zealand. Kenya’s National Sevens Circuit champions Mwamba RFC gave a good account of themselves in finishing third in this pool.

2005 Champions Samoa, with 2010 IRB Sevens World Series player of the year Mikaele Pesamino in their ranks, emerged top of Pool C, setting up a clash with Zimbabwe in Sunday’s quarter final.

Samurai, with a strong Fijian influence, were top of Pool D, their three straight wins booking them a date with Spain in the quarter final.
