Safari Sevens Main Cup Quarter Final Preview

By Louis Kisia and Michael Kwambo

The 2009 Tusker Safari Sevens enters its final day with plenty of action in store. We preview the Main Cup quarter final match ups.

Main Cup Quarter Finals

Kenya v Chairman’s Select:

Pool A winners Kenya play Pool B runners up Chairman’s Select, who are incidentally Kenyan. This makes for an exciting clash for various reasons.

i)Both sets of players know each other very well as it is this pool of players from both sides who have formed the core of the all conquering Kenya squad that finished sixth overall in the 2008/2009 IRB Sevens World Series.

ii)Having beaten Samoa convincingly in their pool match, Chairman’s Select will be out to prove a point against their more established colleagues playing for Kenya. This makes it a must watch match. Kick off 1q1.40am

Zimbabwe v Samurai

These two sides have been faithfully taking part in the Tusker Safari Sevens over the years. Zimbabwe won this tourney in 2000 and were losing finalists in 2006 and 2007. They are out for another good. Samurai, the 1998 losing finalists are pushovers either. This match should keep the fans glued to their seats.Kick off 12.00pm

Emerging Boks v Grenoble

Emerging Boks were losing finalists in 2003 and 2004. They won the tourney in 2006 and 2007 and should not be counted out.  Grenoble should give the Emerging Boks a run for their money. Kick off 12.20pm

Samoa v Raiders

Samoa won the 2005 edition on their maiden appearance with a 52-0 demolition job of South Africa’s Western Province. Will they rise to the occasion when they face South African opposition in the form of Hamilton Radiers? Find out at 12.40 pm
